“S’more” is a condensed form of the phrase “some more.” The earliest known S’more recipe made an appearance in a Campfire Marshmallows cookbook during the early 1920s, where it was referred to as a “Graham Cracker Sandwich.” This text suggests that the treat had already gained popularity among both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. By 1927, a recipe for “Some More” had been published in “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” Newspaper recipes featuring this delightful treat began surfacing as early as 1925.

The shortened term “s’mores” was first associated with the recipe in a 1938 publication targeting summer camps. In a 1956 recipe, the name “S’Mores” was used, listing the ingredients as “a sandwich made of two graham crackers, a toasted marshmallow, and half a chocolate bar.” A 1957 Betty Crocker cookbook included a similar recipe under the name “s’mores.”
